Deciding on what degree you want to earn is crucial for setting yourself up for success in the future. Many students start their college careers by coming in undeclared. They’ll take as many electives as they can to figure out what their passion is. Other students know exactly what they want to study when they go off to college.

One popular area of study is real estate. There are many different majors you can study in real estate such as commercial real estate, residential real estate, and real estate law, just to name a few. You can also find different levels of degrees as well. You can earn your Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, and even your Doctorate Degree in Real Estate. Depending on what you want to do within the scope of real estate will help narrow down which path you should take.

Real Estate Agent
The first career path that comes to mind when thinking about studying real estate is becoming a real estate agent. The role of an agent is to help their clients sell their homes, buy a new home, or find a rental. To become a real estate agent, one needs to complete a few college-level courses, and accredited pre-licensing courses before they can take their test to acquire their license.

Real Estate Appraiser
A real estate appraiser estimates the value of a property, both commercial and residential. The requirements to become a real estate appraiser is most commonly a bachelor’s degree. However, some states only require an associate’s degree.

Real Estate Assessor
A real estate assessor is very similar to an appraiser. They both estimate the value of properties, but an assessor estimates these values for tax purposes and will do entire neighborhoods instead of one sole property. Depending on which state or locality you’re in will decide the level of education needed to become an assessor. Some only require a high school diploma; others will require a bachelor’s degree as well as a license.

Real Estate Broker
Real estate brokers perform the same job as a real estate agent. However, brokers are licensed to own their own business. Brokers are often specialized in either residential or commercial real estate. They need to complete the same level of education as an agent, but their focus is on broker licensure.

Real Estate Clerk
A real estate clerk is responsible for administrative tasks within the office such as taking phone calls, setting up appointments, and filing important paperwork. Some employers require an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, but generally, a high school diploma will do.

Property Manager
Also known as real estate managers, property managers are responsible for taking care of the maintenance and upkeep as well as handling the residents of the property. For this particular job, a high school diploma is typically enough, but certain employers will require either a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
